          LENT
          Suffering that Awakens Compassion
Compassion seen through the lens of justice, peace, and integrity of creation

          REFLECTION

During this season of Lent, Jesus calls me anew to a personal encounter with Him.

Wanting to make known to me the feelings and preferences of His Heart ( Consts. #18), he invites me:

“Come to me, all you who labor and are overburdened and I will give you rest.  Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart.”   (Mt 11:28-29)

As I learn to remain in silence and poverty of heart before Him (Consts. #20), I grow not only in awareness of who I am and how much I am loved, but also how I am called to love radically.

Like Jesus, who passed through suffering and was not incapable of feeling weakness (Heb 2:18; 4:15), I, too, have my experiences of weakness and fragility, of suffering and injustice, of the lack of freedom and the absence of peace.

Looking back at my life, I recall significant moments when I personally experienced weakness and fragility, suffering and injustice, or the absence of peace and freedom.

Suffering, our own and that of others in our Earth-community, leads us to the foot of the Cross, where "the pierced Heart of Jesus opens our being to the depths of God and to the anguish of humankind" (Consts. #8).

How have these personal experiences of suffering influenced:
          • my attitude towards weakness and fragility
          • my sensitivity to others’ pain and suffering
          • my understanding of the realities in the world today?

Like Jesus, who was moved with compassion (Mk 6:34; Mt 14:14), who wept (Jn 11:35;     Mt 14:14), and who discerned in agony for God’s will and his response (Mt 26:36-46;            Lk 22:40-46; Mk 14: 32-42):

How have I been moved with compassion?

How have I made compassionate choices, decisions, and commitments?

How have these deepened or broadened my understanding and living of Sacred Heart spirituality and mission?

          RE-READ IN FAITH

          • disturbing or challenging
          • calling forth new expressions?
