JPIC experiences: Centro Educacional del Sagrado Corazón - Clara Estrella

Centro Educacional del Sagrado Corazón - Clara Estrella shares its JPIC experiences and initiatives. Located in a highly vulnerable neighborhood in the southern part of Santiago, Chile, this institution has been serving the community for 56 years, committed to education and social transformation.
Open Classroom: It is a pedagogical space of co-construction aimed at enriching the teaching process, in which students apply knowledge learned in subjects such as science, mathematics, technology, arts, environmental workshop, others, and during recess periods. The teachers plan the curriculum by relating the learning objectives with the process for implementing this space as an extension of the regular classroom.
It also includes a woodworking area to make furniture for planting and a greywater treatment area where the water from the girls’ sinks is recovered for irrigation.
It is expected that in this space, students will be able to apply their knowledge through planting plant species, working with soil, greywater, woodworking, among other activities.

TEVLAB: is an educational project that promotes hands-on learning and green entrepreneurship through the management of a plant tissue culture laboratory and the simulation of ornamental plant sales. It is aimed at students in the 11th and 12th grades (III° and IV° medio) specializing in Administration, who actively participate in the production and propagation of ornamental plants, taking on different roles within an educational company that simulates a real work environment.
Through this project, Technical-Professional courses apply plant propagation techniques, manage accounting processes, and simulate the commercialization of species, strengthening their technical-professional knowledge and developing key skills for the workforce. TEVLAB not only allows them to gain experience in administration but also to understand the plant production cycle in the laboratory from a sustainable perspective.
This project is complemented by the simulation room CO-WORK, a space designed to practically apply administrative learning, encourage collaborative work, develop job skills, stimulate an entrepreneurial spirit, and promote care for creation in an innovative and sustainable environment.

Social Skills Workshop “Circle”:
Restorative Circles for a Culture of Good Treatment are a pedagogical space held four times a week from 1:45 PM to 2:30 PM, led by each homeroom teacher.
This practice is based on the restorative circles of indigenous peoples and is considered a rite and a life pause, symbolizing community, equality, participation, dialogue, reflection, among others. At its core, it focuses on dialogic and collaborative conflict management and civic education.
Social-Emotional Learning Program:
The Social-Emotional Learning Program has been implemented in the school since the Covid-19 health pandemic and runs from preschool levels through 12th grade.
This program is delivered in the guidance class and aims to strengthen social-emotional learning within the school through the explicit instruction of socio-emotional skills using a playful methodology, based on three main sequences: intrapersonal skills, interpersonal skills, and citizenship skills.
