Overview

Background

Layo is a Andean village (about 5.000 inhabitants) where year average temperature range from 7°C to 8°C. Due to these temperatures, agriculture is difficult. Most of its inhabitants are bilingual Quechua and Spanish speakers. They are self-sustained farmers with literacy difficulties.

Objective

To increase knowledge and productive skill of indigenous youth and adults of six rural communities of the Layo district.

Activities.

Thursdays and Fridays (9am-4pm), lessons are given in the CEBA (Centro de Educacion Base Alternativa) to young people and adults.

  • Theory lessons: Social sciences, religion and English are taught by a RSCJ. Mathematics, computing, environmental and health education are run by local teachers.
  • Productive workshops (since 2011): carpentry, production of dairy products and plant nursing.

Outcomes

  • Participants have improved their communication skills
  • Participants have acquired manual skills
  • Participants sharing their newly acquired skill to other potential learners
  • In 2015, 9 students graduated from the CEBA. Most of them have a family and are community leaders. The younger have followed studies in the Technological Institute of Sicuani and since 2016 in the Technical Institute of Layo.

 

Contexto

Layo es un pueblo andino (unos 5.000 habitantes) donde la temperatura media anual oscila entre los 7 y 8°C. Debido a estas temperaturas, la agricultura es difícil. La mayoría de sus habitantes son bilingües en quechua y español. Son agricultores autónomos con dificultades de alfabetización.

Objetivo

Aumentar los conocimientos y la capacidad productiva de los jóvenes y adultos indígenas de seis comunidades rurales del distrito de Layo.

Actividades.

Los jueves y viernes (9am-4pm), se imparten clases en el CEBA (Centro de Educación Base Alternativa) a jóvenes y adultos.

  • Clases teóricas: Ciencias sociales, religión e inglés son impartidas por una RSCJ. Las matemáticas, la informática, la educación medioambiental y la salud están a cargo de profesores locales.
  • Talleres productivos (desde 2011): carpintería, producción de productos lácteos y enfermería de planta.

Resultados

  • Los participantes han mejorado sus habilidades de comunicación.
  • Los participantes han adquirido habilidades manuales.
  • Los participantes comparten sus conocimientos recién adquiridos con otros posibles aprendices.
  • En 2015, 9 estudiantes se graduaron del CEBA. La mayoría de ellos tienen una familia y son líderes de la comunidad. Los más jóvenes han seguido estudios en el Instituto Tecnológico de Sicuani y desde 2016 en el Instituto Técnico de Layo.
